Statement

My inspiration comes from immediate experiences of life around me, which I record initially in sketchbooks. These “memory triggers” allow me to “play” with the images on a larger scale and with a broader range of media. My memory, imagination and creative instincts enable me to juggle with chance and intent to develop these initial sketches into a new and varied progression of personal statements.

As a student at the Royal College of Art I was drawn to the “glamour” of the neon lights and nightclubs of the metropolis as a resource to abstract images/ikons from. Later whilst living and painting in Berlin with its political wall I was inspired in my painting by alluding to the layers of colourful glamour complemented by the shadows of east/west political confrontation.

Waders 2002

Brian Taylor

My ideas have often been triggered by issues of varied interpretation such as distance and nearness in my beach crowd paintings. The presence of the past in my historical building themes. These issues have also figured strongly in my “surfer” series as memories of pleasure and fun as well as the less safe excitement of the power of the sea. Issues of past celebrations have also led me , in my “Barton Hall Orangery” series, to build from people’s memories of dancing in and around the Orangery in years gone by. I have tried, through my interpretations to “bring it back to life” through colour, movement and implied layers of time. Throughout all these themes of work there is always an over riding aim towards the celebration of the medium and its mark making qualities.
My working methods are varied as I attempt to broaden my awareness of painting and drawing materials and master their properties to my own ends. These methods more recently include acrylics as watercolour on canvas, the use of the Masquepen as a mark maker on canvas and the use of Indian ink as a large scale, dynamic mark maker for conveying the energy of people playing in the sea. This has led me to investigate and develop my ideas to a broad scale; ranging from small scale paintings and drawings to three metre canvases and multiples of, for corporate settings.
